New Chip Allows Versatile Modems

Santa Clara, California-based Virata has developed a single chip that offers high-speed digital subscriber line and 56-kbps modem functionality combined with networking capabilities. The Virata chip combines with three features: a high-speed DSL connection, a standard 56-kbps dial up modem, and Ethernet networking. Vendors can use such chipset to offer one inexpensive combined system destined for different geographies and uses. Once the standard of DSL modem has adopted by equipment suppliers, users will be able to buy a DSL modem in the retail store and install it by themselves.

The mass deployment of DSL will become a reality. However, it doesn't mean that the analog modem will vanish. Such all in one system still provides a good solution for some business or consumers. For example, service providers can offer dial-up service to the customers in case of DSL service outage, and computer users, especially laptop, they could use DSL at home and Ethernet at the main office, then use the dial up modem when working on road. As more and more people are buying a laptop or other mobile computers, this combined chipset will provide a cost-effective solution to meet their needs.
