  • When: MWF 12:00 - 12:50 pm
  • Where: FLH 424
  • Prerequisites: Calculus II (C or better). Derivatives, integrals, and infinite series are topics that you have to know; having heard about it is not sufficient. On the Friday of the first week of classes there will be a Quiz 0 about prerequisites.
  • Office Hours: MWF 4 – 4:50 pm in SE 214 (except when absent due to unforeseen circumstances).
Additional office hours (by TA) on TBA
  • Text: Elementary Differential Equations by W.E. Boyce and R.C. DiPrima, Eighth Edition, Wiley & Sons, 2005
  • Course description: This is a first course in Differential Equations. It will cover most of the Chapters 1-3 and 6 from the textbook, and parts of Chapters 4 and 5.
  • Objectives: Know the basic concepts and terminology of differential equations as taught in this course. Apply the concepts to applied and theoretical problems.
  • Assessment:
Weekly homework, due on Wednesdays; some of it graded (10% of grade).
No homework will be accepted after Wednesday.
Weekly 10 minute quizzes (Fridays) about the material of the past week. (20% of grade)
Two term tests (20% each), October 1 and November 5 (Fridays).
    Final exam (30% of grade), Sunday, December 5, 6:45 – 9:15 pm, SO 270
Sections on the final exam: TBA
  • Homework policy: All weakly assigned problems will be collected; some problems will be graded. The weekly quizzes will be based on the homework. No late homework will be accepted.
  • Make-up policy:
None for homework and quizzes, but only the best 10 of each will count for the final grade.
Students who cannot attend a test must make arrangements for a make-up BEFORE the test.
  • Grading criteria: Only results count, but effort is appreciated.
    0-47%:F, 48-49%:D-, 50-59%:D, 60-62%:D+, 63-64%:C-, 65-72%:C, 73-76%:C+, 77-79%:B-, 80-85%:B, 86-87%:B+, 88-89%:A-, 90-100%:A
  • Grades and other course information will be listed on Blackboard.
