Blackboard
http://www.fau.edu/irm/blackboard/bb9.php (New for Spring 2011)
While keeping the same basic functionality, this new version of the
Blackboard learning management system has a significantly different
look and feel (drag and drop reordering, fewer clicks, easy edit mode),
as well as a number of exiting new tools and features that can help
promote online interaction and increase student engagement (including
blogs, wikis, journals, group assignments, mashups and more).
NOTE: All training classes offered during Fall 2010 will be on Blackboard 9 in order to prepare for this upgrade.
- Journals - for student journaling shared only with the instructor.
- Blogs - for student/group journaling shared with all co-learners with an option to comment on entries.
- Wikis - for group collaborations, all co-learners have viewing and editing privileges.
- SafeAssign - This tool within Blackboard
helps prevent plagiarism by detecting unoriginal content in student
papers. In addition to acting as a plagiarism deterrent, it also has
features designed to aid in educating students about plagiarism and
importance of proper attribution of any borrowed content. http://www.fau.edu/irm/blackboard/safeassign.php.
Instructors
can create Flash-based activities and games using simple templates. The
Flash activities are usable with any web server or can be published
directly to Blackboard. The activities include such things as
flashcards, fact cards, matching, fill-in-blank, crosswords, and quiz
show-like games, etc.

The latter link discusses a new option in Blackboard for
students to participate in creating these learning activities. This tool
allows instructors and students create study materials in a
collaborative, web-based environment. Simple templates are used to enter
items such as glossary terms or facts from lecture. Students can then
view the materials using self-assessments or interactive learning
activities. It integrates seamlessly with Blackboard courses and creates
a social learning environment that is fun and engaging.
This
application provides a powerful tool for creating and managing exams
that can be printed to paper or published directly to Blackboard, ANGEL,
Desire2Learn, eCollege, Moodle, and other eLearning systems..
Additionally, all questions created in this environment will directly
upload into Studymate, thereby eliminating the need for reentry.

This
application provides a custom browser that locks down the testing
environment within Blackboard. Students are locked into the assessment
and are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other
applications.

Elluminate
is a synchronous web conferencing that lets you bring live interactive
audio, video, whiteboard, text, application and desktop sharing into
your classes via Blackboard. You can also record your Elluminate
sessions to share with students who could not attend, or who would like
to review them later.

iTunes
U provides access to a wide range of digital audio and video content
via the iTunes Store, Apple's online music, video and podcast service.
The iTunes U tool within Blackboard allows instructors to create a
private area that includes course-based audio/video materials that are
linked to Blackboard course sites and are only available to the students
enrolled in those courses.

This
tool makes it easy to add audio narrated PowerPoint presentations to
your course web site. It converts your PowerPoint files into a
compressed format that is optimzed for streaming over the Internet.
Students don't need to download any special plug-ins to view these
files.
